I was born on May 4, 1981 in Vyksa, a small town in Nizhegorodskya region of the Russian Federation. Champion of Russia in 2004. Russian Olympic Team Member.
I was 10 when I became interested in sports, thanks to my classmates talking about training and competition. Although he did not have too much free time after school music, I decided to take my first challenge and sign up for a few sports. I started with favorites, football and sambo and then went to the biathlon. I liked everything, probably because each of them got very good results. But it was the biathlon which he managed to demonstrate a few skills, speed, endurance and agility, at the same time, so I decided to spend more time than others. I practiced for a year and a half. It was a hard physical education school, a way of motivation for the future and by which I understood in order to compete: the victory. Winning is a struggle against fatigue, pain and despair.
I started cycling when he was 11 years, from January 2, 1993. The unit and the special attention of our coaches made me feel very good from the start. With much gratitude and sympathy remember Stanislav V. Shlokov and Evgeniy N. Krupin that inspired us to believe in success, in our feelings …. to believe in ourselves in order to realize our dreams.
In these years of inception, not only got lucky with my coaches, but already in my first competition in Nizhniy Novgorod got very satisfactory results. I was lucky enough to prove the race and won both the individual and the group. These awards will keep for the rest of my life.
In 1997 I had my first competition outside of my region and my country. The Tour of Macedonia, Greece, gave me a new victory, and at the same time I was accepted into the School of Olympic Reserve in Nizniy Novgorod, where I had the opportunity to combine classes in the school with training.
The first part of 1998 belonged to the regional team. I got the second prize in an international junior competition in Switzerland, with a third place in one of its stages, and later, I was sixth in a career of this category in Torrelavega, Spain. The coaches were impressed with the results. In the Russian junior championships in Ufa got the fifth. With this success, the coach Rinat N. Latypov of Agidelle, invited me to join his team, which had spent most of the year in Italy, participating in a number of important races, so I did not hesitate too much when accepting the invitation. A month later I won my first race in Italy and one and a half I added two more victories and another set of awards.
In 1999 continued in Ufa with Agidelle, which had proven to be a pretty strong team. Inside it felt in the real school: practice four times a day, learning technical skills and tactics, psychological training, etc. The team gave me nine more victories in Italy and 10 second places in Italy, and finishing in most races in the top ten. My best wins were the Grand Prix Liberazione, Trophy Paganessi and Giro della Lunigiana. That same year I was third in the National Championships, which allowed me to join the Russian national cycling team. At this point in my life I knew what happiness was. Happiness is winning. Working hard for victory … Happiness is hard work.
According to experts, the final years of last century were marked by the emergence of large Russian and Konyshed wheelers, Tonkov, Nerzin, Ugryumov, etc., All fairly applied by the directors of the teams most important Italian and Spanish. In 2000, and at U 23, I was offered SanPellegrinо joining an Italian professional team. The first year in this category is the most difficult for most cyclists. My experience was very different 19 years which had the 23, but still, that first year I got a couple second places. Despite being a rookie, I got it right in Valle d’Aosta, a great tour sub 23 different stages in the Alps between Italy and France. My eighth place overall was my «ticket of entry» into the professional team Mapei. 2001 gave me six more victories and more prizes. I made the top ten of almost every race and I won a fourth in the World Under 23.
After the achievements in 2001, I could easily choose for myself a new computer. I signed a 3 year contract with Italian team Acqua-Sapone, which was supposed to be part of a prestigious team that had signed the famous king of the sprinters, Mario Cipollini — which was a honor to be his companion, «an improvement in my well-being and better facilities in training.
2002 was the line that separated the past from the present. I turned pro. My results therefore also should be.
In 2003 came a new sponsor and the team became known as Domina Vacanze. Although the word «vacation» part of our jerseys, under this name I got my first win as a professional. It was in a stage of Coppi-Bartali International Week in Italy. It was a very special Victorial, over a tough rival, Celestino Italian, and I also stood in fourth place overall and the most combative of the young jersey sub 25. There were a few more wins this year, but the most important was my second in the Giro Emilia with the likes of Di Luca and Rebellin. It was really inspiring.
2004 was my last year at Domina Vacanze. I got my first victory in the Russian national championships and represented my entry for the Olympic Games in Athens where I was tenth overall and the first of my countrymen. Despite the good result, common sense and a perfect strategy gave way to my ambitions as a child and the desire for the title. When they fail, ruined the beliefs I had in myself. However, if it were not for this fact, might never have understood that when one wants to duplicate its success should also be prepared to double failures.
In 2005 I signed a new contract with Rabobank, one of the strongest teams, combative and confident Europe. Participation in big races like the Giro d’Italia and the Tour of Spain, was a very good experience in order to achieve a victory for the team. World In Madrid I was seventh, a good result after heavy training and 2006 gave me more confidence to face new challenges, especially after winning the first stage of the Tour of Valencia.
In 2007 gave start to a new stage in the CSC team to achieve further success as the third stage of Paris Nice and the Silver Medal of the World Cycling in Stuttgart joined on the podium, first Italian Paolo Bettini and Germany’s Stefan Schumacher. The third victory of the year took place in Monte Paschi Eroica.
In 2008 after a second place in the Clasica San Sebastian, I prepared thoroughly for my second appointment with the Olympics, this time the Beijing Olympics where I got the Bronze Medal and a great personal satisfaction after so many years of hard work .
In 2009 I joined the joint Russian Katusha, where I managed another year of important podiums as in the Gran Premio Miguel Indurain, Tour of Lombardy and Tour of Wallonia and the Silver Medal at the World Cycling Mendrisio.
The work, which in my case is the sport, it inspires me. The races and competition are not part of my life. They are my whole life.
